Now you’ve actualised your dream, the next step to start your own business is a business plan. You might want to work with a marketing company for this, but a good way to gage if your idea is financially viable is to work on a back-of-an-envelope business plan. Take your costs, such as staff pay, equipment and rent charges, and minus that from the profit you think you’ll make. If you come out positive, it’s a go. Negative, and you’ll need to rethink a part of your plan.

Target customers

One of the easiest ways to know how to market your small business is to think about your target customers. It’s true, variety is the spice of life, and not everyone will be interested in the reason you had to start your own business. Sit down and write out the characteristics of your target customer, or customers. How old are they? What are their likes? Dislikes? What do they work as? What do they do for fun? Really get this down, and you’ll know where else to target in terms of advertisement!

Ask for advice

Our hardest of tips for when you start your own business is to be sure you ask for advice. We’re only human, and no doubt when you take the plunge into this new venture there’ll be pitfalls and setbacks. A good way to overcome these is to ask for advice from a business mentor or investor. Don’t be entitled

Last but not least, if you want to start your own business, remember that your staff will be there with you along the way. Never be above your station, or hesitate to jump in and help out when needed – if your staff see you as part of the team, they’ll no doubt end up filled with devotion!
